Briterican
I made reference to a future relative being a “Ginger” in an email to another future relative and was asked what that was. Brits reading this will now have a knowing grin on their face.
I came across this site which put it quite well and factual like : http://separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.com/2006/08/ginger.html
It’s true; Gingers do get a hard time in the UK - any chance of a dig and they’ll get it. There was a TV series in the UK called “Game On” that spawned the phrase “Don’t be a ginger tosser”.
That blog was also interesting cause it’s an American living in the UK finding her way through the language minefield. Eddie Izzard had something to say on that subject too…. anyhoo - one of her posts reminded me of the exact same challenge I have here when ordering water. Yes.
“I’d like a water please”
“Sorry sir?”
“A water”
*confused look from server* *Rach squeezes my hand*
“A warrrdur please”
“Of course sir”
*Paul mumbles something about pronunciation* *gets told to suck it up and general reminder this is not the UK*
etc.
This article is interesting though - indicates the difference in government and media terror between our two continents
